Well, it’s not all about the mat, yoga is mainly about you. How you go about practicing yoga is up to you. And yes, the mat can add value to your comfort in the poses.
1. For example, a thinner mat with a smooth surface can greatly assist during balancing poses, such as half-moon, tree, or eagle. Also, in poses where your feet are spread in a wide stance. If you have two thin mats, you can stack them for extra padding.
2. Thicker mats help cushion your wrists or tailbone in multiple pose variations of down dog or boat.
3. Key care tips include not applying lotions or oils to your hands or feet before using your mat and cleaning after each use.
Mostly, I have experienced using the standard-sized mat of 68 inches long and 1/8” thick foam and rubber-made mats. I started with and still periodically use my thin mat. I have learned to appreciate and use slightly thicker mats. My suggestion for the best go-to yoga mat will allow those new to yoga to get started and seasoned yogis to continue their practice. This suggested mat is 4 inches longer than the typical mat. Those who prefer a thicker mat have more cushion during their yoga practice. Just remember excessively thick mats, that feel squishy, lessen stability. Make sure you are comfortable, this will make your yoga practice more enjoyable!
